Education and Children

Woodcraft Folk

The Woodcraft Folk believe passionately in equality and co-operation – all young people are welcome to join their groups. Every week thousands of volunteers and young people meet in school halls, community venues and a host of other places to learn about big ideas through fun activities like singing, playing and debating. Their aim is to have great fun, but also to try and develop children's self-confidence and build their awareness of society around them. Through their activities, outings and camps they help members understand important issues like the environment, world debt and global conflict. In recent years they have focused on sustainable development. By encouraging children to think, they hope that they will help build a peaceful, fairer world. There are no groups in Penwith but in Helston there are Woodchip (up to 6 years), Elfin (6-9 years), Pioneer (10-12 years) and Venturer (13-15 years) Groups. Contact them via the central organisation.

Education Otherwise

Although education is compulsory in the UK for children between the ages of five and sixteen, school is not. Many families prefer to educate their children otherwise than at school, and it is their right under UK law to do so. Home educating families do not have to follow the National Curriculum and there is no single 'right' way to educate a child at home. Education Otherwise provides information and resources for home educating families and those considering home education for the first time, including guidance on home education and the law and links to local home education groups across the UK. In Penzance "PZ Home Ed" meet on Monday afternoons for workshops during term-time. You can contact them via the Education Otherwise website.
