Building, Homes & Energy

Renewable energy suppliers and clean energy installers plus builders who specialise in green building and organisations interested in sustainable housing.

Cornwall Together

Cornwall Together Limited is a subsidiary of Eden Project Limited. Cornwall Together, Energyshare and uSwitch are working together to deliver this project which is free for consumers to use. They are an organisation with a social purpose, but will look to cover costs by charging a fee to the winning supplier. They will re-invest 10% of the money into a fund to help alleviate fuel poverty in Cornwall and will seek match-funding for that sum. You register with them giving a few details about your current energy usage. When they have enough people on board, they'll negotiate a special deal with electricity and gas suppliers. Heating oil will follow a slightly different process. They’ll then come back to you with two options for a better energy deal, including one which is likely to be cheaper and one which is likely to be from energy from a more sustainable source. It is hoped that group buying this way will help many people cut their energy bills.

Geothermal Engineering Ltd

Geothermal Engineering has brought geothermal specialists together with industry partners to develop the first large-scale deep geothermal power plant in the UK at United Downs near Redruth. The project will involve: drilling and testing the deepest on shore wells in the UK (each of the three wells required for the project will be 4.5km deep); the development of a 10MW electric, 55MW thermal geothermal power plant; and the development of a geothermal centre of excellence in conjunction with Exeter University. The project has planning permission to proceed and drilling should start on the site in late 2012. When the United Downs power plant is operational, Geothermal Engineering hope to roll out similar projects across the South West to produce both electricity and renewable heat. The total target production will be 300 MW of electricity and 1GW of renewable heat across all sites within a 25 year timeframe.
